3D White Wall Sculpture
Objective: The purpose of this assignment is to explore the principles and elements of design through abstract thinking. Students are challenged to think about 2D and 3D design solutions simultaneously to solve a design project.
Each team will work with the following theme: UNDER THE SEA. This theme is to abstractly lead you in developing a “White Wall Sculpture” using materials at hand (paper, cardboard, recycled items). These sculptures are to visually transform your “canvas” into a sculpture that uses the principles of shade and shadow as a design element.
Each team must submit a typed “Reflection Statement” that describes their approach and the final sculptural composition.
Christopher Joseph Department Store
Objective: To optimize the functionality of the 29,000 square foot former movie lot and transition it into a unique department store that is focused on the customer experience.
The design should be out of the ordinary and the merchandise presented in a straightforward and simple manner. Make a style statement that is young, lively, and experimental. Incorporate unusual, witty and dramatic design elements.
CJ’s is looking for an exceptionally unique merchandise presentation solution. Custom fixtures are to be designed for the store to distinguish CJ from its competitors. Keep displays to a minimum so that the merchandise stands out. To give it a luxurious feeling, features are to include plenty of seating, interactive spaces and "Instagram-able" moments.
Community Health Clinic Project
Overview: The project for this course is to complete design services for a Community Health Clinic, which serves an impoverished rural community in the United States. This is a publicly funded facility, so you must provide designs that are functional and efficient.
In addition to the Community Health Clinic, you will also be designing a physician office on the second floor directly above the clinic.
The goal for this healthcare project is to meet the needs of both healthcare employees and patients. Students should consider the patient circulation as well as the staff and the medical equipment supplies.
This semester-long project is broken up into 5 milestones.
Fundamental Atmospheres Project
Objective: A research driven digital modeling project based loosely on designing a spiritual space. This project was created to help students think both Two-Dimensionally and Three-Dimensionally at the same time to solve an interior design problem.
Students will be designing a small spiritual gathering space of their choosing based on programmatic research relative to volumetric spatial considerations.
This project includes three phases of design:
- Research & Design Statement
- Conceptual Development
- Final Design Documentation
Boutique Hotel Project
Objective: To develop an interior design build out for the first and second levels of a 17-story large commercial hotel that accommodates vacation travelers in the capital city of Valletta.
Malta is an island nation that consists of three islands: main island Malta, Gozo and Comino. The country’s official languages are Maltese and English. Valletta, which is centrally located on the island’s North coast and has the island’s largest harbor.
Client Profile: This is new build construction and the final design build will include the lobby & reception area with gift shop and lounge, and the second level that includes a luxury spa, spirit’s bar, and fine dining restaurant. The client is also asking for a proposal for a luxury hotel suite with two finish package options.
The hotel owners’ vision for the interior is to create a modern and serene calmness that nods to the 16th century Baroque architecture and rich cultural history.
The hotel has amazing views overlooking Republic Street and magnificent views of the Gateway to Valletta and Freedom Square. Many of the upper floor suites have views all the way to Grand Harbor.
In designing the public areas of the hotel, it is important to include materials that are beautiful, yet durable and easy to maintain. In planning these facilities, it is important to consider flow, expanse, volume of business, tempo of service, direction, ADA, and movement throughout all public areas.

Problem Statement: The client is a young, newly married couple who have just purchased a one-bedroom loft apartment in the Cork Factory in the Strip District of Pittsburgh, PA.
